Guidelines of Use

Hi! I'm glad you're here on my system. Since I have certain resources available to me, I'm using this opportunity to provide what services I can to the online fan commmunity of The Lion King of which I've considered myself a part for years.

• RESOURCE USAGE

  However, I'd like you to bear a few things in mind as you use the resources on this system. First of all, remember that it's my equipment-- I paid for it, and I'm offering services for free. I'd like you to treat it as you would any friend's property. I'm not going to impose any disk quotas, either automatic or manual; I'd like you to try to keep your disk usage under 20MB, unless you've talked to me and made sure it's okay to use more. Don't worry-- I'll probably say yes. :)

  Use the "sysinfo" command to check on the system resources (or use "df" if you'd prefer), for instance to see how much disk space is being used.

• CONTENT

  Something rather important that I'd like to make sure you understand is this: I do not want to get into any kind of trouble, with anybody, as a result of the actions of the users of my system. So it's a rule of this system that I will not allow any "warez" to be stored here for any length of time. This includes any form of commercial software that is pirated or hacked to remove copy protection and uploaded into your personal directory. I won't go snooping around looking for illegal software in your directory, but I'll probably notice if it's taking up tons of disk space. Similarly, don't use this system to distribute anything illegal or that would get anybody (namely you or me) in trouble: for instance, ix-nay on the erotic drawings of Simba and Nala. :) If you want to keep things like that in your directory, fine-- just don't put them in public_html.Furthermore, please do not keep any MP3 files on lionking.org, unless they are recordings of yourself performing, or otherwise not under any record-label licensing scheme. MP3 files recorded from CD are illegal, and it's me that's responsible.

  Warez distribution is subject to immediate removal or disabling of your account. Please keep this in mind.

• HACKING

  Do not hack. If I find that you're using my system as a base point for hacking (or for making a nuisance of yourself on things like IRC), I'll suspend/remove your account immediately. I don't have time to play games with people who think they're kewl hacker d00dz. Take it elsewhere. Better yet, do something useful with your life.

• BACKUPS

  There is currently no backup device attached to the system, though I am currently weighing the pros and cons of tape backup vs. Jaz disks and other options. Until I add such a device, however, I encourage you to keep a backup of your website on your local computer, and update that backup when you make changes. I'm doing that with my own site. The chances that this system will go down in flames are of course slim, but I don't want to have to deal with people yelling at me for being the cause of the ruin of their life's work. It's a free service I'm providing! And my OWN website depends on the reliability of this system, so rest assured I will be continuously doing everything I can to keep it running smoothly. :)

• COMMERCIAL USE

  In short, don't. It's for the same reason as the previous concern: I don't want anybody coming to me and saying "Your system was off the net for five hours and I lost a business client because of you!" Besides which, if anything commercial takes place on this server, it becomes suspect in the eyes of Disney's legal department, and we face being shut down for that reason. Of course, I don't have too much concern about this one-- you guys are Lion King fans, after all, and you know the drill about keeping a low profile. :)

• OTHER THAN THAT...

  ... have fun! The network link this system is on is multiple T3, which means there's basically nothing you can do to overload the connection. :) There is also plenty of RAM in the system, so unless you're compiling massive programs or running things that have heinous memory leaks, that shouldn't be a problem either.
